There is no "The" in the title.
The Film's surprise is already blown in the idiot ad campaign
Also, Card is not getting a dime out of me (and yes, he wrote the screenplay so he's up for points) for his rather twisted views on things the past 20 years.
I don't support homophobic Mormons sorry.
Feel free to enjoy it though. |

Oh God.
I'll never get his booming voice out of my head from the 1988 New Orleans WorldCon.
Could hear him 300 yards away from ballroom at the Sheraton Hotel entrance.
.......and it was a panel discussing "What to do about the Wesley Crusher Problem ?" |

Can we have a little leeway on this for the upcoming "Gravity" ? |

The character of Wesley on Next Generation was not exactly well received at all upon initial broadcast. Really violent hatred tbh. |

sorry ..I know the character ..he was a smug bastard that ended up being in the Q continuum ... I just didn't get krix`s analogy of him .... so what`s wrong with being a smug bastard who knows everything ...Christ knows ..theres enough of them in GD ?
My analogy ? What ?
It was a discussion panel at Worldcon that I did not attend. Didn't have to as Orson was so loud you could hear it clearly. |

This upcoming release is the first of the series to have such. |

Oh yes indeed. The very surprise blown in the ad campaign.
edit: Also, it's honestly a day late and a dollar short.
Only reason it finally got the green light after over 20 years was the new trend to absolutely film every work of Young Adult SF possible. |

Ah. Now I follow you.
Gone with the Wind ? The Shining ? Harry Potter Films? Clockwork Orange ? Wizard of Oz (1939) ? War of the World ? Contact ? Dune (Syfy Mini) ? Cloud Atlas ? The Handmaid's Tale ?
I can go on.......... |

I can live with that. Heinlein did it, and whilst it was annoying, you could kinda filter it out. But where he is now? No thanks. None of my $$, either.
I really had liked Card's novel "SongMaster" back around 1980. Upon a recent perusal, it contains a really really disturbing anti-gay subtext.
It was already there. |

Early post-Venice Film Fest Comments for "Gravity":
""At once the most realistic and beautifully choreographed film ever set in space, Gravity is a thrillingly realized survival story spiked with interludes of breath-catching tension and startling surprise."
"........while Bullock is aces in by far the best film she's ever been in."
""As scripted by Cuaron and his son Jonas, this tale of one woman's grim expedition into the unknown is a nerve-shredding suspenser, a daring study in extreme isolation, and one of the most sophisticated and enveloping visions of space travel yet realized onscreen."
"...a howl in the wilderness that sucks the breath from your lungs. It comes blowing in from the ether like some weightless black nightmare, hanging planet Earth at crazy angles behind the action."
".....the directorGÇÖs long-overdue follow-up to GÇ£Children of MenGÇ¥ is at once a nervy experiment in blockbuster minimalism and a film of robust movie-movie thrills, restoring a sense of wonder, terror and possibility to the bigscreen that should inspire awe among critics and audiences worldwide."
"Somewhere, one imagines, the spirits of Stanley Kubrick and Max Ophuls are looking down in admiration." |

Astenion wrote:I don't see the big deal about him being anti-gay marriage. Just about a billion other people are anti-gay marriage too. Just what the author's opinions about certain issues have to do with his book that has nothing to do with said issues is a mystery to me. Now this boycott of the film and such by the pro-gay marriage team is just ridiculous and hypocritical. Let the man believe what he wants to believe. Sure, he's a **** but who cares? Why is it such a big deal?
I'm not going to give him a dime so he can use it to defend things like California Prop 8 again.
Many others will. |

This is why there are still requirements for having one's criticisms taken seriously. |

Astenion wrote:That's your choice to make, but it's just his opinion. It's not like he's running for president and plans to ban gay marriage or anything. Am I missing something? What if the boss of CCP were anti-gay marriage? Would you stop playing Eve? How does his opinion on the subject affect your life? That's what I'm getting at. Is the movie going to be homophobic? I seriously doubt it, as the book doesn't even get close to the subject. I'm pro-gay marriage, but if I wrote a movie that had nothing to do with it, how would it affect people who were anti-gay marriage?
I dunno, the book just seemed a little meh. Of course it's just my opinion, but having heard so many people rant and rave about it, I was rather disappointed. Maybe I was expecting too much. Maybe I should've read it in 1984 when I was 6 years old. Ok, the twist (if you want to call it that) was interesting and inventive, but I had already figured it out by the time I got there.
Just as there are requirements for having one's criticisms taken seriously, so should there be requirements for having one's praises taken seriously.
Had they simply paid him a bulk fee for his story....fine.
This man is getting profit points for his script. That's a lot of money to use in whatever way he wants. |
